This play was the result of another fruitful collaboration with Mohan Sachdev, with whom I worked with for A Handful of Dust. It was one of the most ambitious plays I staged in terms of the scope of the play and I owe it to Mohan for giving me the inspiration to write and stage this play. I also got to work with Lee Weng Kee, an extremely good actor who contributed to the role in more ways than I thought possible, his chemistry with Maryann who played his mother was electric.

A City of Man takes its title from St Augustine's classic City of God, in which he argues that the best place for a man to reach salvation is actually a dictatorship, because in such a place one is safe and physically well although one's freedoms are curtailed, and as such he will seek for the spiritual and not be interrupted in it. The City of Man also refers to the struggles that and temptations that man deal with on their way in life. This play attempts to put the struggles of a few men as they search for meaning in a city that doesn't seem to care.
