Kundabuffer was a departure at the time of its staging, from our previous plays. For the first time we experimented with an ensemble as opposed to a small number of actors. The play was inspired by my interactions with the Drama Review Committee when I tried to stage Flights Through Darkness at the onset of starting Aporia Society. My experiences with the drama critics in Singapore as well as various interactions with the drama scene also informed this play. The logistics of coordinating a large ensemble cast with a too often absent main actor also became an issue. Last minute cast changes also threw the performance of the play in doubt but fortunately it was overcome. The play was a huge success in terms of the audience reaction but due to its criticism of the ecosystem of the Singapore theatre scene, it was panned or ignored by the drama critics of the day. The good things is, work exists while critics wither away.

The whole premise of the play was the staging of a play in Singapore and the problems encountered along the way, with a manipulative director and various cast members of all shapes and sizes. It was also my first satirical work. My war with the Straits Times' Life! theatre writers was already ongoing, this and any subsequent plays were totally ignored by them and given zero publicity. The National Arts Council had already blacklisted our theatre group and it was harder and harder to get funding for anything.

Despite all that, we soldiered on.
